Chapter 7: Thesis and examination matters

7.1 Status while under examination

Actual doctoral or MPhil candidature ceases upon the submission of a thesis for examination. There are, however, occasions when candidates continue to make a significant contribution to the University and have a demonstrated need to access library and laboratory facilities to maintain this contribution. Examples are those candidates in receipt of a Postgraduate Publications Award or who are using the University’s libraries to facilitate preparation of papers arising from material in the thesis. In such instances, the dean of the faculty on the recommendation of the head of department/academic unit may recommend a candidate for an adjunct staff appointment. The appointment is called an adjunct junior research associate and entitles the holder to a Monash University staff identity (ID) card and access to such facilities as may ordinarily be accessed with a staff ID card. This appointment is for an initial period of six months.
