Chapter 9: Fees, scholarships and grants

9.1 Fees

9.1.1 Research Training Scheme (RTS) for Australian citizens or permanent residents and New Zealand citizens

The Research Training Scheme (RTS) provides Commonwealth-funded higher degree research candidates with an 'entitlement' to a commonwealth-supported place for the duration of an accredited research course, up to a maximum period of four years full-time equivalent study for a doctorate and two years full-time equivalent study for a masters by research.

RTS places are allocated to research candidates at the time of their initial enrolment. Candidates are required to complete a declaration, indicating if they have had prior candidature in another research degree, prior to being awarded an RTS place at Monash. Where a candidate has had a previous enrolment in a course at the same level, which was not completed and where enrolment was within three years of commencing the new course, institutions must deduct ALL prior candidature from the maximum funding available. The institution will only receive funding for the remaining entitlement.

9.1.2 International student fees

All international candidates studying in Australia are required to pay full fees and be enrolled on a full-fee basis. Course fees are not fixed for the duration of the course but may be governed by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) increases, which may increase the level of fees throughout the course.

International candidates are also required to have Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC).

Candidates who are accompanied to Australia by dependants must have family rate cover for OSHC.
