Changes to Accreditation: Research Masters Supervision

The RGSC has identified a problem that disadvantages candidates who upgrade to a PhD from a research masters degree, where their main supervisor is not accredited to continue to supervise their PhD candidature.

The RGSC also aims to have all HDR candidates supervised by staff who have undertaken research training programs.

Changes to Accreditation

Currently there are rules governing the accreditation of supervisors of PhD and MPhil candidates. These rules specify allowable supervision load (in terms of EFTSL and number of students), supervision status (associate or main) and supervision percentage.

The RGSC has decided, after consultation with faculties, to extend these rules to cover the supervision of research masters candidates, ensuring that a university-wide policy covers the accreditation of HDR supervisors. This means that all supervisors of research masters candidates will have to be accredited through the same system as PhD and MPhil supervisors. Accreditation can be attained either through the program of the nine modules plus master classes or through doctoral completions.

Timetable for Implementation of Changes

The extension of these rules to the supervisors of research masters candidates will take effect as of 1st January 2007. Any research masters candidates who enrol as of this date must have a level 1 or level 2 accredited main supervisor.

Pathways to Accreditation

Level 1 accreditation requires the completion of all 9 modules in the Level 1 research supervisor accreditation program.
Level 1 Workshops and Mock Advisory Panels will be held throughout the year.

When all 9 modules of the program have been completed, return the Application for Accreditation form to MRGS.

A certificate of accreditation will then be issued.

Please note that the Faculty of Arts has additional criteria for supervisor accreditation.
