Exemption & Credit

We frequently receive requests for staff members who have had experience supervising doctoral candidates at other institutions to be exempted from undergoing training through the Monash supervision accreditation program. In order to facilitate assessment of these requests, you must provide the following information for the MRGS Steering Committee to consider:

  1. Your name, title & position
  2. Academic unit
  3. Previous experience as PhD supervisor
    • number of PhD candidates supervised
    • whether you were supervisor for the entire candidature (from enrolment to successful completion) or a portion
    • percentage of supervision held (eg sole main at 100%; associate at 25%)
    • institution where supervisions occurred

Please submit your application on the Request for Exemption form to Dr Anna Lucas at MRGS.

If exempted, you will be able to be a main supervisor immediately, but you will still be required to attend a doctoral examination advisory panel and to complete some self-directed modules that cover Monash University policy. These modules can be completed within the next 12 months. If accreditation has not been finalized by then, your accreditation status will be reviewed.

Staff who have completed supervision training at other institutions but not supervised doctoral candidates to completion are generally not eligible for exemption from the Monash supervision accreditation program.

Higher Education Development Unit Workshops

The Higher Education Development Unit (HEDU), a former division of the Centre for Learning and Teaching Support (CeLTS), offered workshops that satisfy the requirements of some of the level 1 program. The list of equivalent modules shows which MRGS modules you are not required to do.
