Frequently Asked Questions

 Q.  Why do I need to be accredited?
 A.  Research supervisors of PhD, MPhil and Masters by research candidates at Monash are required to have accreditation if they wish to be main or co-supervisors of HDR applicants. These details are checked during the admission process. In some faculties, staff can be an associate supervisor (25%) until accreditation is awarded.
 
 Q.  How do I get accredited?
 A.  There are 3 ways to become an accredited Monash supervisor.

1.   Complete the 9 modules of the Level 1 Monash research supervisor accreditation program by attending a Level 1 one-day workshop which is held about 3 times each year and attending a Mock Advisory Panel (a 2 hour seminar, Module 8b).
Put your name on a waitlist for Level 1 workshop or waitlist for Mock advisory panel.
You will be emailed when dates are set.
Complete remaining modules and send signed application form at http://www.mrgs.monash.edu.au/research/staff/supervision/accreditation07.rtf to Monash Research Graduate school (MRGS)

OR

2.   Follow the "apprenticeship model" by undertaking the role of an associate supervisor in a candidature from initial enrolment through to submission of thesis and successful award of degree, attend a doctoral examination advisory panel, then apply for an exemtion from attendance at the Level 1 workshop http://www.mrgs.monash.edu.au/reserach/staff/supervision/exemption.doc and send to MRGS

OR

3.   If at distant campuses or otherwise disadvantaged, complete the 9 modules of the Level 1 Monash research supervisor accreditation program by
(1)  notifying MRGS that you have appointed a mentor at: pending accreditation;
(2)  following a self-directed program of discussion and practical participation with your mentor according to the modules described in http://www.mrgs.monash.edu.au/research/staff/supervision/accreditation07.rtf
(3)  attending a Mock Advisory Panel (a 2 hour seminar) or an actual advisory panel within the faculty (for Module 8b). Put your name on a Waitlist for Mock Advisory Panel.
 
 Q.  Can I supervise a student before I’m accredited?
 A.  In most faculties you can supervise as an associate supervisor 25%.
Faculty of Arts requires staff to undertake an induction with the Associate Dean Graduate Research.
 
 Q.  What is covered in the Level 1 workshop?

 Q.  How often are the workshops held?
 A.  This is determined by demand and numbers on the waitlist. There are about 3 MRGS Level 1 workshops each year. Faculty of Medicine also run workshops with the same modules.
Waitlist for MRGS Level 1 Workshop
For Faculty of Medicine workshops email Dr Jennifer Scott with your name, department/institute and phone number (also dept of honorary appointment if appropriate). The Faculty workshops are held twice a year (June and Oct/Nov). Both Faculty or MRGS workshops cover some of the 9 modules in the accreditation program but vary slightly.
 
 Q.  When is the next workshop?
 A.  The next level 1 workshop
 
 Q.  I’ve finished the workshop and the Mock Advisory Panel.
What do I do now?
 A.  Complete the remaining modules as described on the application for accreditation form at:
http://www.mrgs.monash.edu.au/research/staff/supervision/accreditation07.rtf   and send the form with signatures where indicated, to MRGS.
A certificate of accreditation will be sent to you and the faculty will be notified of your accreditation
 
 Q.  I supervised a PhD student at another university.
Will I be accredited at Monash?
 A.  Staff who have supervised a doctoral student from start to successful completion at another institution can apply for an exemption from the Level 1 workshop. They may still be asked to complete some modules of the accreditation program to familiarise themselves with Monash procedures. (eg attend a doctoral examination advisory panel, read the chapter on examination procedures at Monash and the overview of Monash policy.)
