Overview: Research Supervision Accreditation

Monash University has developed a fast-track approach to research supervision accreditation which acts as an alternative to the existing apprenticeship model. Our fast-track scheme is cited as world best practice in A Handbook for Doctoral Supervisors (2005) by Stan Taylor and Nigel Beasley.

Under the apprenticeship model, trainee supervisors need to first undertake the role of associate supervisor for the duration of a candidature, from admission through to submission of thesis and successful award of degree, before they are eligible to be a level 1 main supervisor in their own right.

In the fast-track model, intending supervisors need to complete a series of nine modules to be accredited as level 1 supervisors. Approximately 85 per cent of the requirements of these nine modules are covered by attendance at a Monash Research Graduate School Research Supervisor Training Workshop or faculty equivalent.

Level 1 supervisors can supervise no more than 4 full-time equivalent (FTE) HDR students/ up to 6 individual students as the main or associate supervisor.

Supervisors following the fast-track model need to complete master classes to obtain level 2 accreditation, which permits supervision as the main or associate supervisor of the maximum complement of students: no more than 8 FTE HDR students/ up to 12 individuals. Please note that the Faculty of Arts has additional requirements for accreditation.
