Living allowance scholarships

Eligibility – general
Living allowance scholarships are offered for full-time research at postgraduate level. Applicants must also satisfy the English language proficiency levels set by the university.

Awards will not be available to those who, as a result of prior candidature and/or prior scholarship, would be entitled to a maximum tenure of less than 12 months.

A very small number of part-time awards may be available.

Applicants must hold an Australian or New Zealand bachelors degree with first class honours or a qualification and/or research experience deemed equivalent by the university. Special requirements apply to MIRAs, please refer to details below.

Applicants who have neither H1 nor H1E equivalent qualifications will not be offered awards while H1 applicants remain without offer.

There are no age restrictions relating to these awards.

Australian Postgraduate Award (APA)

Only Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens, and Australian permanent residents are eligible for these awards. Persons intending to undertake or who are currently enrolled for a research masters degree, PhD or research professional doctorate are eligible to apply.

Awards will not be available to those who:

  • are in receipt of another equivalent award/scholarship/salary to undertake the research higher degree, providing a benefit greater than 75 per cent of the APA rate (note that ‘salary’ refers to time release for full-time candidature on salary)
  • have already completed a PhD or research professional doctorate or equivalent
  • have already completed a research masters degree or equivalent unless intending to undertake a PhD or research professional doctorate (ie a scholarship holder cannot hold an award for a second research masters)
  • have previously held an APA, APA(Industry) or an Australian Government-funded Postgraduate Research Award, unless it was terminated within six months of commencement of the award.

An award may be made available for enrolment as a research candidate under Monash’s external mode regulations, however the support of the relevant academic unit and faculty will be required. The awardee must also reside in Australia.

Monash Graduate Scholarship (MGS)

Australian citizens, permanent residents and overseas students are eligible for these awards. Persons intending to undertake or who are currently enrolled for a research masters degree, PhD or research professional doctorate are eligible to apply.

Awards will not be available to those who:

  • are in receipt of another equivalent award/scholarship/salary to undertake the research higher degree, providing a benefit greater than 75 per cent of the MGS rate (note that i) ‘salary’ refers to time release for full-time candidature on salary, and (ii) where an award or salary offering similar benefits is to be used to meet course fees for international students, a case may be made to the Research Graduate School Committee)
  • have already completed a PhD or research professional doctorate or equivalent, unless the proposed research area for the second PhD or professional doctorate is significantly different to the prior PhD or professional doctorate
  • have already completed a research masters degree or equivalent, unless intending to undertake a PhD or research professional doctorate (ie a scholarship holder cannot hold an award for a second research masters)
  • have previously held for more than six months a Monash Graduate Scholarship. An exception may be made for a PhD or research professional doctorate candidate where the prior MGS was for a masters degree
  • are enrolled or are intending to enrol as a research candidate under Monash’s external mode regulations.

Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) (part-time)/Monash Graduate Scholarship (MGS) (part-time)

International students are ineligible for part-time awards.

Persons with significant caring commitments or a medical condition are eligible for part-time awards.

A part-time award may be awarded to those with a medical condition precluding full-time study (supported by medical certification) or to those who are able to demonstrate significant caring commitments, including:

  • caring responsibilities for a pre-school child
  • caring responsibilities for school-aged children as a sole parent with limited access to outside support
  • caring responsibilities for an invalid or disabled spouse, child or parent.

Part-time awards are not available to applicants seeking to undertake paid employment on a full-time or a substantial part-time basis. The same employment conditions that apply to full-time awardees apply to part-time awardees.

Monash Silver Jubilee Postgraduate Scholarship

One Monash Silver Jubilee Postgraduate Scholarship will be awarded annually. Persons intending to undertake or who are currently enrolled for a research masters degree, PhD or research professional doctorate are eligible to apply. The scholarship will be awarded by rotation to faculties:
2010 Science
2011 Arts or Art & Design
2012 Law, Education, Business & Economics or Accident Research Centre
2013 Engineering or Information Technology
2014 Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences or Pharmacy

Conditions of award
Conditions pertaining to eligibility (with the exception that the award is made in rotation on a faculty basis), duration of award, relocation and thesis allowances, leave entitlements, employment, residency, study away from Monash, other courses, suspension, penalties, termination, Monash’s obligations to the award holder, award holder’s contract with the university and annual progress reports are the same as those applying to the Monash Graduate Scholarship.

Sir James McNeill Foundation Postgraduate Scholarship

The Sir James McNeill Foundation Postgraduate Scholarship was established in memory of the late Sir James McNeill, who had a long association with Monash University.

The scholarship shall be awarded annually to enable a doctoral candidate to pursue a full-time program of research that is both environmentally responsible and socially beneficial to the community.

The award shall be made in the field of engineering, medicine, music or science and shall be awarded on the basis of outstanding merit.

Conditions of award
Conditions pertaining to eligibility (except as specified above), duration of award, thesis allowance, leave entitlements, employment, residency, study away from Monash, other courses, suspension, penalties, termination, Monash’s obligations to the award holder, award holder’s contract with the university and annual progress reports are the same as those applying to the Monash Graduate Scholarship.

Monash Indigenous Research Award

Two Monash Indigenous Research Awards (MIRA) will be offered annually from 2010 to encourage and support promising Indigenous students to commence a postgraduate research degree on a full-time on-campus basis. The awards aim to attract Indigenous students who are eligible to enter directly into a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Master of Philosophy (MPhil) or masters by research. Current students already enrolled in a research program at Monash University are not eligible for these awards.

The scholarship is also available to high-achieving students who may apply for a conjoint Honours/Research Degree program.  The conjoint Honours/Research Degree program includes completion of an honours year prior to commencing the research degree program (PhD, MPhil or masters by research).   

Financial value and details:

  • PhD:  $35,000 per year paid to the student as a fortnightly tax free stipend for up to 3 years.  PhD candidates may apply for up to two six month extensions.
  • Research masters/MPhil: $35,000 per year paid to the student as a fortnightly tax free stipend for up to 2 years only.
  • Honours: $10,000 a semester for two semesters paid to the student in instalments.

Other Support:
Cohort support including mentoring and academic and research skills development will be provided for recipients of these awards. 

Eligibility:
Applicants must be Indigenous Australians who meet all of the current eligibility requirements for entry into the relevant research degree (PhD, MPhil  or masters by research) or honours program.  In addition, applicants for the conjoint Honours/Research Degree programs must have achieved outstanding results in the honours year in order to continue to receive the scholarship for the research degree. Current students already enrolled in a research program at Monash University are not eligible for these awards.

Monash Indigenous Research Awards (MIRA) may be awarded for full time on-campus study only.

Selection Criteria:
PhD, MPhil or masters by research:
Awarded on academic achievement and demonstrated research capacity.

Conjoint Honours/research degree program: Awarded on academic achievement. To be considered students must have achieved outstanding results in relevant studies.

All candidates who are shortlisted for selection will be interviewed as part of the selection process. Selection is undertaken by the Research Graduate School Committee. The successful awardees will be notified in mid-December.

Application procedure:
PhD, MPhil or masters by research: Applicants must upload the Indigenous Australian confidential statement of support document in the Supporting Documents section of the on-line scholarship application form to be considered for this award.

Conjoint Honours/research degree program: Applications are in the form of a letter of application (addressed to Research Graduate School Committee), an up-to-date CV (including academic transcript/s), the Indigenous Australian confidential statement of support document and referee reports. Please include information on academic performance (awards etc), previous research experience and extracurricular activities (if applicable). Applications must be sent to the Research Graduate School by the closing date of 31 October 2009.

Monash Equity Scholarship

Monash University is offering two Equity Scholarships for HDR study undertaken at one of the University’s Australian campuses.

Eligibility:
Applicants must be an Australian or New Zealand citizen or Australian permanent resident at the closing date of 31 October 2009.

Applicants must hold an Australian or New Zealand bachelors degree with first class honours or qualifications and/or research experience deemed equivalent by the university. Persons intending to undertake or who are currently enrolled for a research masters degree, PhD or research professional doctorate are eligible to apply.

Applicants must provide evidence to show they meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • applicant’s academic career has been adversely affected*, or
  • applicant with a disability

* This category applies when a student’s academic career has been severely interrupted, delayed or otherwise constrained by illness or family responsibilities e.g. child bearing, child rearing or other family responsibilities such as the sustained care of a dependant family member (who may, for example, be elderly, sick or a person with disabilities).  This category does not apply when an applicant has opted to travel or pursue an alternative profession/discipline area before returning to study.

Benefits:
The conditions and benefits are the same as those applying to the Monash Graduate Scholarship.

Selection:
Selection of the MES is based on four main considerations: personal circumstances, academic merit, likelihood of completing the intended course and the strength of the supporting documentation.

MES are not awarded to applicants who:

  • Cannot provide any evidence of circumstances to support their application
  • Have already completed a course deemed to be at the same, or higher, level for which they are seeking scholarship support
  • As a result of previous candidature and/or prior scholarship, have a maximum tenure of less than 12 months
  • Have previously held, already been awarded or later received another equivalent award, scholarship or salary for the studies for which they seek a MES.  An “equivalent” award is regarded as one greater than 75% of the base MGS rate.

Tuition fee-paying scholarships

Eligibility – general
Applicants must hold, or expect to hold, a bachelors degree with first class honours, or a qualification deemed equivalent by the university from an Australian or overseas tertiary institution. Applicants must also satisfy the English language proficiency levels set by the university.

Applicants must meet international student visa requirements as specified by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship, including the requirement to purchase and maintain a standard Overseas Student Health Cover policy approved by the Commonwealth Government Department of Health and Ageing.

Awards will not be available to those who, as a result of prior candidature, would be entitled to a maximum tenure of less than 12 months.

Awardees may concurrently receive a stipend or living allowance from any source, except a scholarship under any other Commonwealth Government scholarship scheme or any other scholarship scheme to which the Australian Government makes a substantial contribution.

Awards will not be available to those who:

  • are in receipt of another equivalent award/scholarship/salary offering similar benefits (note that ‘salary’ refers to time release for full-time candidature on salary)
  • are enrolled or are intending to enrol as a research candidate under Monash’s external mode regulations.

Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS)

Applicants who are citizens of all overseas countries, excluding New Zealand, and who are commencing full-time study for a full-time research masters degree, PhD or research professional doctorate are eligible for these awards. Applicants who commenced their research candidature in 2009 may be considered for an IPRS only if they were unable to apply for a scholarship in the last selection round.

Applicants who commenced a higher degree by research at an Australian institution and terminated their enrolment with six months of commencement may also be considered for an award.

Awards will not be available to those who:

  • have already completed a PhD or research professional doctorate deemed the equivalent of an Australian PhD or research professional doctorate by the university
  • have already completed a research masters degree deemed the equivalent of an Australian research masters degree by the university and who wish to undertake another research masters degree
  • have previously held an IPRS for a PhD or research professional doctorate
  • have previously held an IPRS for a research masters degree unless that degree was completed and the second IPRS is for a PhD or research professional doctorate
  • have held an Australian Agency for International Development scholarship within the two years prior to commencement of their award
  • are enrolled or are intending to enrol as a research candidate under Monash’s external mode regulations.

Monash International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (MIPRS) and Vera Moore International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (VMIPRS)

Applicants who are citizens of all overseas countries, excluding New Zealand, and who are intending to undertake or who are currently enrolled for a full-time research masters degree, PhD or research professional doctorate are eligible to apply.

Awards will not be available to those who:

  • have already completed a PhD or research professional doctorate deemed the equivalent of an Australian PhD or research professional doctorate by the university, unless the proposed research area for the second PhD or professional doctorate is significantly different to the prior PhD or professional doctorate
  • have already completed a research masters degree deemed the equivalent of an Australian research masters degree by the university, and who wish to undertake another research masters degree
  • have previously held for more than six months an MIPRS or VMIPRS. An exception may be made for a PhD or research professional doctorate candidate where the prior award was for a research masters degree
  • have held an Australian Agency for International Development scholarship within the two years prior to commencement of their award, unless a case made to AusAid (Canberra) by Monash University on the awardee’s behalf, has been approved
  • are enrolled or intending to enrol as a research candidate under Monash’s external mode regulations.
