Guidelines for H1E in the Faculty of Law

Law Honours program

The award of an Honours degree in Law is based on the weighted average of marks obtained in Monash Law subjects. Depending upon their Honours Weighted Average.

(HWA), students may be awarded an Honours classification of HI, HIIA, HIIB or HIll.

Students completing LAW5207 Research Subject 512 (Honours research subject) have a 20% bonus added to the mark obtained in that subject for the purposes of the HWA calculation.

Applicants awarded H1 are eligible to apply for scholarships whether or not they have undertaken the honours research subject (LAW 5207).

Aust/NZ Honours graduates

A number of factors are considered in order to make allowance for ungraded honours degrees and the relatively small number of H1 degrees that are awarded. These factors include:

  • Final class ranking
  • Published articles in recognised refereed journals
  • Performance in honours thesis and/or research papers
  • Examiners' reports
  • Proportions of students with honours degrees and number of H1 degrees awarded
  • Prizes
  • Averages over the final 2-3 years of the undergraduate degree

Other graduates (including those from Aust/NZ)

  • LLM by major thesis that is ungraded (100% research component
  • LLM by coursework with a (minor?) thesis of at least 66% that is ungraded.
  • LLM by coursework with a minor thesis component less than 66% that is graded.
  • LLM by coursework.

Where the degree includes coursework a minimum average of 75% is desirable.

Consideration (where appropriate) will be given to:

  • Grading of the thesis
  • Examiners' reports
  • Articles published in recognised refereed journals in English.
  • Coursework averages
  • Grading of research components of coursework units
