Notes on Eligibility
General
Applicants must hold, or expect to hold, a bachelors degree with first class honours, or qualifications/research experience deemed equivalent by the university, from an Australian or overseas tertiary institution.
Awards will not be available to those who, as a result of prior candidature and/or prior scholarship, would be entitled to a maximum tenure of less than 12 months.
Australia Postgraduate Awards (APA)
Only Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents and New Zealand citizens are eligible to apply.
Awards will not be available to those who:
- are in receipt of another equivalent award/scholarship/salary to undertake the research higher degree, providing a benefit greater than 75% of the base APA rate. Note: "Salary" refers to time release for full-time candidature on salary;
- have already completed a PhD or research professional doctorate or equivalent;
- have already completed a research masters degree or equivalent unless intending to undertake a PhD or research professional doctorate (i.e. a scholarship holder cannot hold an award for a second research masters);
- have previously held for more than sixmonths an APA, APA (Industry), or an Australian Government-funded Postgraduate Research Award (unless the previous government postgraduate award was for a coursework degree - eg APCA, CPCA).
An award may be made available for enrolment as a research candidate under Monash's external mode regulations, however the support of the relevant academic unit and faculty will be required.
Monash Graduate Scholarship (MGS)
Australian citizens, permanent residents and overseas students may apply for these awards.
Awards will not be available to those who:
- are in receipt of another equivalent award/scholarship/salary to undertake the research higher degree, providing a benefit greater than 75% of the base MGS rate. Note: (i) "Salary" refers to time release for full-time candidature on salary (ii) Where an award or salary offering similar benefits is to be used to meet course fees for international students, a case may be made to the Research Graduate School Committee.
- have already completed a PhD or research professional doctorate or equivalent, unless the proposed research area is significantly different to the prior PhD or professional doctorate;
- have already completed a research masters degree or equivalent, unless intending to undertake a PhD or research professional doctorate;
- have previously held for more than six months a Monash Graduate Scholarship. An exception may be made for a PhD or research professional doctorate candidate where the prior award was for a masters degree;
- are enrolled or are intending to enrol as a research candidate under Monash's external mode regulations.
Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS)
Applicants who are citizens of all overseas countries, excluding New Zealand, and who are commencing full-time study for a full-time research masters degree, PhD or research professional doctorate are eligible for these awards.
Awards will not be available to those who:
- are in receipt of another equivalent award/scholarship/salary offering similar benefits;Note: "Salary" refers to time release for full-time candidature on salary.
- have already completed a PhD or research professional doctorate deemed the equivalent of an Australian PhD or research professional doctorate by the university;
- have already completed a research masters degree deemed the equivalent of an Australian research masters degree by the university and who wish to undertake another research masters degree;
- are enrolled or are intending to enrol as a research candidate under Monash's external mode regulations;
- commenced their studies in a previous year and had prior opportunity to apply for an IPRS in that year;
- have held an Australian Agency for International Development scholarship within the two years prior to commencement of their award.
Monash International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (MIPRS) and Vera Moore International Postgraduate Research Scholarship

Applicants who are citizens of all overseas countries, excluding New Zealand, and who are intending to undertake, or who are currently enrolled for a full-time research masters degree, PhD or research professional doctorate are eligible to apply.
Awards will not be available to those who:
- have already completed a PhD or research professional doctorate deemed the equivalent of an Australian PhD or research professional doctorate by the university, unless the proposed research area is significantly different to the prior PhD or professional doctorate;
- have already completed a research masters degree deemed the equivalent of an Australian research masters degree by the university, unless intending to undertake a PhD or research professional doctorate;
- have previously held a MIPRS or VMIPRS. An exception may be made in the case of a PhD or research professional doctorate candidate where the prior award was for a research masters degree;
- are enrolled or are intending to enrol as a research candidate under Monash's external mode regulations;
- have held an Australian Agency for International Development scholarship within the two years prior to commencement of their award, unless a case has been made to AusAid (Canberra) by Monash University on the awardee's behalf, has been approved.
